Open Source Disaster Recovery
Great piece over at First Monday describing the establishment and evolutionary trajectory of open source networks providing services in the aftermath of Katrina and the Tsunami. More later.
New Issue of Foreign Policy
Greg Grant hits another homerun with this piece on the bazaar of violence in Foreign Policy. Also don’t miss the superb roundup on China led by Minxin Pei (the primary voice on the real status of China).
No Results On Oil
NYT – Classic doom loop:
Voting 389 to 34, the House approved steep new penalties for oil companies convicted of “price gouging,” a crowd-pleasing but largely symbolic measure. Republicans then tried but failed to rush through a bill long sought by the oil industry that would speed regulatory approval for new refineries.
Big bangs don’t cut it.
More Ripple Effects From 9/11
NYT – The number, previously estimated at around 550 million, is set to jump by a billion with the new memorial –
The new estimate, $972 million, would make this the most expensive memorial ever built in the United States. And that figure does not include the $80 million for a visitors’ center paid for by New York State.
And that is just an example of symbolic terrorism.
