Netflix Roku Box = VCR

Unimpressed. This thing is like the VCR of streaming. No HD, no 5.1.

Wonder if Netflix ever looked at the feasibility of DVD on demand delivered by partnering with UPS.

Rough idea: UPS downloads full DVD’s of the movies from the studios, burns them at 0dark30 based on who ordered what yesterday. Adds these as part of its delivery platform. Picks them up, rewrites over the DVD-RW the next morning. Rinse and repeat.

Obviously, this is before streaming becomes viable, which based on the ranking of the US in the world, won’t be for a while, especially with Comcast etc taking the helm. But DVD-RW’s could suddenly become relevant, Netflix could speed up , shut down the warehouses, and pay studios on a per-burn basis (someone else can crunch the numbers). (Or UPS could do the same and put Netflix out of business.)

    Very interesting idea.

If you look at advertisements in Business Week from 20-25 years ago, this is similar to the model that FedEx used to sell faxes as a service.

UPS really has a great system. They could be vertically integrating tons and tons of great services. Really don’t want them to go the way of FedEx.

Not sure what they are up to. Need to do some research.
