Hoffman On Modern/Future COIN

An interesting question was poised to Frank Hoffman, but the answer did less than satisfy me given that it is a topic I’ve written about before:

  • (Restated): “Draining the swamp” strategy is likely not a viable plan in modern day COIN given that the supply chain is constantly approaching one individual.
  • I don’t remember a real answer, anyone who does should feel free to post (this goes for all posts actually).

Hammes On 5GW

The most salient points:

  • 4GW requires the entirety of governance to combat it.
  • 5GW will require all of society to combat it.

Lind On Barnett and IR

Bill Lind was immensely entertaining, choice quotes when someone asked him about Thomas Barnett’s core/gap paradigm:

  • “Total horseshit”
  • “4GW for Children… complete with a fairy godmother leviathan”
  • “Only the Pentagon could love it”
  • “Ahistorical”
  • “Acultural”
  • “Not serious”
  • “Should be read in a comic framework”

Lind on international relations:

  • India is the land of the future and always will be
  • The veneer is wearing thin
  • China disintegrating is our greatest threat

Gudmundsson On The ANG

Bruce Gudmundsson said that the National Guard was ideally suited for COIN already because:

  • Well connected as individuals, states and federal government representatives
  • Designed for counterinsurgency given its domestic deployments in American history
  • Coast Guard should be pulled in as well because it has been focusing on 4GW forces for its existence
