Arquilla in the NYT

Nice mention

“Policy makers are tremendously sensitive to collateral damage by virtual weapons, but not nearly sensitive enough to damage by kinetic” — conventional — “weapons,” said John Arquilla, an expert in military strategy at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. “The cyberwarriors are held back by extremely restrictive rules of engagement.”

Despite analogies that have been drawn between biological weapons and cyberweapons, Mr. Arquilla argues that “cyberweapons are disruptive and not destructive.”

Hacking Air Traffic Systems

Righter Kunkel was careful not to show exactly how to bring aircraft out of the sky. But he showed how its easy to shut down information going into an air traffic control tower, jam radar, submit a fake aircraft flight plan, get recognized as a pilot even if you aren’t a pilot, and stop planes from taking off at an airport.

Kunkel laid out the process. You could get a fake identification (which is illegal). Go to the doctor and get an aviation medical certificate which shows you are fit to fly. With that, you can get a student pilot’s certificate number. Then you can log into the FAA’s  pilot registration site. Then you can submit yor own flight plans.

As An Aside

The trip is going well, not getting as much work done as I planned, but its great to decompress for a few days. Thinking about warfare can get burdensome.

  • The y and the z on kezboards are often switched. I stopped caring after a few tries.
  • If you want to sneak something into or out of Croatia, take the tour bus. Zero baggage checks.
  • No government knew where I was for approximately two days (passport check was manual without even a cursory computer check headed into Bosnia). Had an insane urge to continue running.
  • Dubrovnik is like Disney Land, complete with teenagers dressed up as medieval characters.
  • Mostar is like an elven layered city.
  • WiFi is actually verz hard to find. The netbook is holding up well (great for quick notes and analysis) but the infrastructure just is not in place.
  • Global Guerrillas is banned from at least one ISP in Bosnia.
  • Increasinglz want to buy a boat, stop for supplies every so often, and have satellite internet on a Macbook.

Headed to Split by ferry tomorrow, then Vienna for three days and back at it with renewed gusto. Amazing what a sea breeze can do for your spirit.

Escalating the Border War

J.C. Gonzalez, the brother of Pfc. James Gonzalez, 24, said the soldier has been missing for about a week. He said the FBI told the family that the Army had received a call demanding a $100,000 in ransom money and a demand that all soldiers be withdrawn from the border.

In Europe

Posting will continue to be slow. (Taking my first trip  for pleasure – vs the pleasure of work – in several years.) Destinations include Croatia, Bosnia, Germany, and Austria.

Life here has a pleasant pace, but I’m still able to feel productive with the aid of a handy dandy HP Mini netbook.
