Edible Schoolyard Is Pretty Amazing
This is the New Orleans version. ‘Seeded’ with $1 million:
- A third of an acre. A composting and worm composting (vermiculture) station, an outdoor classroom with green living roof and native plants, a wetlands area, citrus grove, row crops, and butterfly garden.
- Teachers can use the garden for interdisciplinary lessons.
- A teaching kitchen.
- Use the output to create demand for quality food at the local level. “Cafeteria changes to date include the addition of a daily salad bar wtih homemade salad dressings, fresh fruit and vegetables at every meal, more whole grains, and the reduction of canned and processed food items.”
Next time I’m in town, I’m going to try and take a look at it. Key to replication is to bring that initial outlay down.
