PBS – From 1929 to 1933, the marriage rate fell by 22 percent.

Many young people could not afford to leave their parents and start their own households. At the same time, the divorce rate dropped by 25 percent. If you were already in a household, you couldn’t afford to set up a second one. The birth rate declined by 15 percent.
