Resilient College Organizations

Here’s an often overlooked (for good reason) segment of governance that could pioneer resilient communities: college student governments.

They’re uniquely poised –

  • Large budgets.
  • Constituency has low disposable income.
  • No real purpose.

The real power of a student organization is that it serves as a mechanism for combined expenditures. With some smart thinking, and the right motivation, you can really cut down costs for each student, while making a contribution to the local community (colleges cluster resources like money, land, intellect, as well as demand). Distributing the burden, localizing production of necessities, the limits are boundless.

The hard part is getting kids to play ball. If you’re fixated on having a $100,000 concert, you won’t likely see the appeal of a Costco card that lets you save 20% on food and supplies. Or geothermal heat. Or solar generation.
